Luis Suarez struck his 11th goal of the season to help Liverpool earn a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea dominated the first half and took the lead when John Terry headed home from a corner.

Suarez nodded a leveller with just under 20 minutes remaining and though the Reds had chances to go on and claim all three points during an excellent finish, they wouldn't have been too downhearted as they left the capital.

Liverpool went into the game having recorded successive league doubles over their hosts, a statistic which gave Roberto Di Matteo cause to classify the Reds as a 'bogey team' in his pre-match press conference.

His side almost made the ideal start in shaking off that tag when Joe Allen lost possession in midfield on six minutes, inviting Eden Hazard to play Oscar through on goal. The Brazilian was under pressure from Andre Wisdom but should have tested Brad Jones, who was again standing in for the injured Pepe Reina.

Operating with three centre-backs in the first half, Liverpool controlled the early possession, but it was Chelsea who looked most threatening in the final third.

Liverpool's hopes of qualifying for the Europa League knockout stages suffered a setback after they went down 1-0 to Anzhi Makhachkala in Moscow on Thursday.

The Russian side struck the evening's only goal in first-half stoppage time when Lacina Traore skilfully spun Sebastian Coates and lifted the ball over Brad Jones.

Liverpool pressed in search of an equaliser after the break but it never came, while Anzhi were guilty of spurning some good openings themselves.

The pre-match team news confirmed a first ever senior start for Conor Coady in midfield. The 19-year-old formed part of a youthful Liverpool side which consisted of four teenagers, with Jon Flanagan, Adam Morgan and Andre Wisdom also in Brendan Rodgers' XI.

They were joined by more experienced colleagues Joe Cole, Jamie Carragher and Stewart Downing as the Reds looked to take a giant step towards qualification from Group A.

A handful of Liverpool fans made the 1,600-mile journey from Merseyside to Moscow, while Anzhi made a marginally smaller trek across Russia to the capital for the game.

 sensational goal from Luis Suarez was not enough to earn Liverpool three points as Newcastle left Anfield with a 1-1 draw.

The 25-year-old displayed stunning control to take a long ball onto his chest before rounding the goalkeeper and firing his 10th goal of the season.

That levelled an equally memorable volley from Yohan Cabaye.

Liverpool had enough chances to secure a victory, while Newcastle were reduced to 10 men in the closing stages when Fabricio Coloccini was dismissed for an ugly tackle on Suarez.

The game was preceded by a presentation by Gary McAllister to Steven Gerrard on the day of his 600th appearance for Liverpool - a figure reached by only nine men before him.

It is a sign of our No.8's standing in English football that even the Newcastle supporters stood to applaud, while Jamie Carragher thinks his friend can now rightly claim to be the greatest player in Liverpool's 120-year history.

Liverpool's hopes of successfully retaining the Capital One Cup are over after they went down to a 3-1 defeat to Swansea City at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Chico Flores opened the scoring on 34 minutes of the fourth-round tie when he powered home via his head from a corner.

Joe Cole spurned a great chance to net an instant equaliser when he directed a weak header at goal when unmarked, while substitute Steven Gerrard rattled the post midway through the second period.

However, Swansea secured their passage into the quarter-finals when Nathan Dyer capped a counter-attack by tapping home Pablo Henandez's low cross at the Kop end.

Luis Suarez reduced the arrears on 77 minutes by heading in a Gerrard free-kick, but Jonathan De Guzman wrapped up a Swansea success with an injury-time strike.

The pre-match team news confirmed a starting berth for 18-year-old striker Samed Yesil, while Jonjo Shelvey lined up to make his 50^th Liverpool appearance.

The likes of Joe Cole, Oussama Assaidi, Joe Allen, Jack Robinson and Jordan Henderson completed the starting XI, while Brendan Rodgers named a strong bench that included Luis Suarez and Gerrard, Raheem Sterling and Martin Skrtel.

The bitterly-cold evening presented Rodgers with a first chance to pit his wits against former club Swansea since he departed the Liberty Stadium for Anfield in June.

However, the boss stressed in the build up that there would be no room for sentiment come kick off as the Reds looked to take another step towards a successful defence of the trophy they'd held aloft at Wembley in February.

Liverpool were forced to settle for a point at Goodison Park after a pulsating Merseyside derby saw neighbours Everton battle back from two goals down to clinch a 2-2 draw.

The Reds stormed into the lead on 14 minutes when Leighton Baines turned the ball into his own net while attempting to clear a Luis Suarez strike and their advantage was doubled after our Uruguayan striker nodded a perfectly weighted Steven Gerrard free-kick past Tim Howard.

But Everton fought back and were level 10 minutes before the interval courtesy of goals from Leon Osman and Steven Naismith.

Liverpool were denied all three points when Suarez had an injury-time goal ruled out in dubious circumstances.
